Aug 28, 2023 | News

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is pleased to announce that this month’s BUEI Talks: ‘Island SOS’ presentation will be hosted by Dr. Paul Brickle of the Falkland Island. Dr. Brickle is the Chief Executive Officer of the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI) and will be delivering a talk on ‘Pioneering Environmental Stewardship’ on Sunday, September 3rd at 3:00 PM.

Running monthly, BUEI Talks: ‘Island SOS’ aim to highlight innovative Ocean Development initiatives from islands around the world. Each ‘Island SOS’ talk focuses on a singular island nation and topic, ranging from islands all over the globe like Montserrat and the Azores and aims to explore ideas like geospatial planning and citizen-driven marine protection among others.

Dr. Brickle is a former Fisheries Biologist and Marine Ecologist of fifteen years with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology from the University of Newcastle and a MSc and PhD from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

During his presentation, Dr. Brickle will discuss the innovative environmental stewardship of the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI). Established in 2012, SAERI aims to be a world-class research institute that teaches students and builds capacity within and between the South Atlantic Overseas Territories as well as globally through three focal areas: Ecosystems, Earth Science, and Remote Sensing and Data.

Similar to Bermuda, the Falkland Islands are a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The remote archipelago, located in the southern hemisphere, hosts a population of close to three thousand people and is home to diverse wildlife in the South Atlantic.  While the North Atlantic has more Islands and a variety of coastlines, both the North and South Atlantic have distinct ocean currents that influence whether around the world.

Each ‘Island SOS’ takes place live for an in-person audience at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium with our overseas guests presenting via video link.
