The South Atlantic Environmental Institute (SAERI) is a research institute operating from its main base in Stanley, Falkland Islands. Originally a department within the Falkland Islands Government, it became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charity Commission in England under Charity number 1173105. It is also entered on the register of Charities in the Falkland Islands.

SAERI aims to be a world-class research institute that teaches students and builds capacity within and between the South Atlantic Overseas Territories as well as globally through three Focal Areas: Ecosystems, Earth Science and Remote Sensing & Data.

Chief Executive Director Dr. Paul Brickle joined SAERI after15 years working as a Fisheries Biologist and Marine Ecologist with the Falkland Islands Government Fisheries Department. He has a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He also has an MSc and PhD from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland in fisheries biology and zoology respectively. He has led numerous research programmes and managed the performance of other scientists.


This BUEI Talks series features discussions with individuals leading innovative Sustainable Ocean Strategies on their island homelands, and to inspire Bermuda residents interested in safeguarding the health of the ocean surrounding our Island.
