BUEI’s Black Film Experience

In celebration of Black History Month, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is proud to present our ‘Black Film Experience’. This festival will feature a selection of films produced by talented Black directors, actors, and screenwriters. Three highly acclaimed films will be showcased in this experience including: ‘A Thousand and One’ (2023), ‘Pretty Red Dress’ (2022), and ‘All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt’ (2023).

Each film will be shown on a different day and time, so be sure to mark your calendars!

The 2023 Crime/Drama film, ‘A Thousand and One’, will be screened on Friday, February 9th at 7:30 pm. Written and directed by A.V. Rockwell in her feature directorial debut,  ‘A Thousand and One’ was a winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival where it premiered. We follow the complex tale of unapologetic and free-spirited Inez and her 6-year-old son, Terry, as they set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity, and stability in a rapidly changing New York City. The film stars Teyana Taylor (Stomp the Yard: Homecoming, Coming 2 America), Will Catlett (The Devil You Know, Love Is), Josiah Cross (King Richard), Aven Courtney (Strive, Frankensitter), and Aaron Kingsley Adetola (Rise, Once Within a Time).

‘A Thousand and One’ is rated R, with a runtime of 1 hour and 56 minutes. Tickets for this film are available at both General Admission and Big Screen Package prices. Click HERE for tickets.

On Saturday, February 17th at 6:30 pm, Films at BUEI will screen the ‘Pretty Red Dress’. This British Dramatic Comedy tells the story of Travis, Candice and their daughter, Kenisha, and their relationships with the same red dress. Written and directed by Dionne Edwards, the film features several Black actors well-known in the world of musical theatre including Natey Jones (NT Live: Small Island, Together), Alexandra Burke (Sister Act the Musical, My Best Friend’s Wedding the Musical), Maria Almeida (The Strays, Fifteen-Love), and Rolan Bell (EastEnders, Our Girl).

‘Pretty Red Dress’ is rated NR, with a runtime of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Tickets for this film are available at both General Admission and Big Screen Package prices. Click HERE for tickets.

Closing out BUEI’s Black Film Experience on Sunday, February 18th at 4:00 pm is a matinee screening of ‘All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt’, This 2023 American Drama is written and directed by Raven Jackson and produced by Barry Jenkins under his Pastel banner with A24. ‘All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt’ was released commercially by A24, the studio behind ‘The Witch’ (2015), ‘Moonlight’ (2016), ‘Lady Bird’ (2017), ‘Hereditary’ (2018), ‘Uncut Gems’ (2019), and many other highly acclaimed films. While there is very little spoken dialogue in the film, the story is carried on the back of its incredibly talented cast. This cast is led by newcomers Charlene McClure and Reginald Helms Jr.; it also includes the talents of Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit, Obi-Wan Kenobi), Sheila Atim (Bloodmoon, The Pale Horse, The Underground Railroad), and Chris Chalk (Gotham, Perry Mason).

‘All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt’ is rated PG, with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. Tickets for this film are ONLY available at General Admission pricing. Click HERE for tickets.
