In 2017, BHS joined the Eco-Schools programme and focused on the Waste and Litter Minimisation pathway. The students recognised that their recess and lunch hour created the most opportunity for waste. Students worked to reduce the amount of waste created through implementing new policies in relation to the use of plastics (bags, cutlery, plates, and containers).

A composting project is another simple initiative to deal with food waste and is a wonderful way to teach children about life cycles. Explore BUEI Educator Julie Steele’s bin full of worms, isopods and other recycling critters and learn how to make one of your own with the Eco-Schools video below. The West Pembroke School students used these techniques to create their own compost bin at their school.
