Water Pathway
A resource that makes up over 70% of the earth, yet only 2% is available as fresh. We drink it, we wash with it, and we use it to make everything we use. How can we protect it from waste and pollution? This theme provides an introduction to the importance of water both locally and globally and raises awareness of how simple actions can substantially cut down unsustainable water use.
Local Examples
For Primary schools this pathway focuses on the water cycle and how we collect and conserve water here in Bermuda. This pathway guides you to ask questions around dripping taps and how the schools’ plants are watered to inspire actions such as monitoring the school’s water meter and implementing ways to reduce water waste.
For Secondary and higher education schools there are more in-depth lessons and set projects available for students. The Bermuda college has offerings under Best Practices for Residential Water Management, Drinking Water Quality Control, and Fundamentals of Wastewater Treatment and Management. Additionally, our delivery partners from water engineering firm Koom Consulting and Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) are running a project called “The First Flush”. This is a pilot project to test a device that may improve Bermuda’s rainwater catchment systems. Students may have the opportunity to assist in data collection and monitoring for this project and by sharing their findings with the rest of the school can earn recognition for their eco-Schools award.
