Sustainable Food Pathway

The Sustainable Food pathway encourages young people, their parents, and the whole community to take responsible food-related choices and actions that protect the environment, promote human rights, and improve the wellbeing of society – every day.

Local Examples

The most popular action plan for this pathway is to create a school garden. A garden on the school property allows students to learn hands-on how to grow their own food. Here in Bermuda, we do not have a lot of local farm space and a lot of our produce is imported. These imported items can be very expensive and carry a large carbon footprint. Choosing to shop at local farmers markets and growing some of your own fruits and vegetables is much more sustainable. A great lesson to teach students of any age and to share with the community. A project like this can also be linked to existing school classes such as plant biology, pollination, and soil health. Choose the Sustainable Foods pathway today to learn more about this and gain support for your schools’ garden.

Choosing sustainable seafood is another great way to support this pathway, especially on an island surrounded by the ocean. BUEI is a conservation partner for the Seafood Watch organization, the global leader in the sustainable seafood movement. The organization provides advice to consumers whilst also working directly with businesses and governments around the world to increase the market demand for and a reliable supply of sustainable seafood. Learn more on their website or download the app to always have the information with you. For our younger audiences, Seafood Watch also has a web-based interactive café that explains the pros and cons of various types of seafood. Check it out HERE.

Choose the Sustainable Foods pathway and work with our delivery partners at BUEI to learn more and develop an action plan to make sustainable changes in your school and community for the ocean.
