The 7-Step Framework

The Eco-Schools Seven Steps methodology is a series of carefully guided measures to help schools maximise the success along their journey. A school should strive to complete the 7-steps for a pathway within one academic year.

The Green Flag Award System

Aside from all the benefits the school experiences through the process, it is encouraging to be recognised for your effort and have something to show for it. We offer three award levels. Once you have completed the 7-Steps for your chosen pathway, you can put together a portfolio and apply to be reviewed by Eco-Schools Bermuda.

The Green Seed – Complete one pathway following the 7-Steps Framework.

The Green Shoot – Complete a second pathway following the 7-Steps Framework.

The Green Flag – Complete two pathways PLUS the “Climate Change” pathway following the 7-Steps Framework.

About Eco-Schools Bermuda

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that provides students the framework to introduce sustainable principles into their school. Eco-Schools is a student action programme, so it is the students who form and lead their Eco-Schools Committee, which carry out sustainability audits and implement sustainable practices. Whilst these actions start in the classroom, the overall aim is to expand this sustainable mindset to the local community.

Created by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Eco-Schools programme is currently implemented in 68 countries, involving 59,000 schools. Eco-Schools is recognized by the United Nations as a model initiative for Education for Sustainable Development. In 2013, Greenrock was selected as the FEE representative in Bermuda, and they opened the local Eco-Schools programme. After 5 successful years involving 22 schools with approximately 300 students, the baton was passed to BUEI in 2019. With ocean literacy and environmental education at the heart of BUEI’s mission, we are excited to expand our reach as national operators of Eco-Schools Bermuda.

“A strong foundation for the Eco-Schools Programme has been laid by Greenrock in the last five years and places BUEI in a solid starting position to continue with this valuable programme” – Tara Curtis, Former CEO of BUEI.

Interested in joining this action-based environmental education programme? ANY Bermuda school can register. The BUEI Eco-School coordinator will help you through the seven-step process to earning the prestigious Green Flag award. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
